Genica MP3 Player Review

The Genica MP3 Player is also known by a few other names, including MPTrip.. Which for no good reason costs $15 more I think from some other place. I purchased mine from
computergeeks.com.

I first found out about the Genica player from the MP3.com review several months ago.  You should check out the review, and the message board for more info.

Features:

1st Impression

I ordered the mp3 player from computergeeks.com on a Wednesday night and received it Friday morning.  It cost $99, and I chose the 3-day air select shipping from UPS.  The shipping box was smashed, but that's to be expected from UPS.  And the inside container also had a nice dent in it, but everything was ok inside it.  I shouldn't be too pissed off about it, since I used to work for UPS, and smashed stuff for fun myself :)  Everyone there does... so I try NEVER to use UPS.

First, I popped in 2 regular AA batteries, and put in a regular audio CD, and it worked fine.  Next, I tried an old mp3 cd, with all the mp3 files in the root directory. That worked great.  Then I tried a 3 year old MP3 cd, which had all the mp3s in directories.  It worked fine also.  It's now Sunday, and no problems so far.  It has worked on every CD I've tried.  It does not work well with a few MP3s that have very low encoding rates... but those all sound like crap anyway.  You just have to make sure you have decent quality mp3s to begin with.  The cds that I have compiled in the past just had any mp3s I would download.

The casing, like everyone said, was kind of flimsy.
At least when compared to a sony discman.  I mean, it doesn't look like it's homemade or anything, it's just not high quality.   It's not something that would make you return it or anything.  The buttons do look a little crappy and weak too, but they work fine.  Someone's comment was right, the spring to open the door is a puny piece of crap..  But overall, it's good enough... what do you expect for $99?

I also purchased the accessory kit for an extra $19.  It comes with a 24 CD case, 10 blank CDs, a cd to cassette adaptor, cigarette lighter power adaptor, and 2 sets of headphones.  This is all stuff I needed anyway, but if you don't need it, don't get it.  One of the sets of headphones had a plug that was too small for the earphone hole, so it was worthless!  And unlike their claim, it does not come with an "over the head type" of headphone, they are both in the ear type.  The cd to cassette adaptor is low quality in my opinion, and does make a noise as it turns, like someone else commented.  It could be annoying if you have a quiet car and are listening to quiet music or something.  But neither of those apply to me.

Pro's

Con's

Conclusion

Overall, I'd give this product a 8.5 out of 10.  I subtracted half a point because it was shipped by UPS, and another half a point because of the flimsy case and buttons, and another half because it is complicated to figure out at first, and the manual sucks.  But it is well worth the $99 price.  To me, the ID3 tags are not a big deal.. it's not like I'd be looking at them while I'm driving..  I also received an e-mail today about the new mp3/audio cd/dvd/vcd/blahblahblah player over at computergeeks.com for $199.  It looks like something really cool for your home system.

A napster for roms?

Ok, I guess napster isn't going to be shut down. Can't these morons make up their minds? What is the point of one judge making a decision if some other judges are going to change it? How stupid.

Anyway, the author of a program e-mailed me a few minutes ago mentioning his napster like program for roms:

"have I got news for you. I am the author of a program called RomNet. I am not much of a Web designer so my web page is not too fancy, But the product is superb. It is just like napster in its idea except for Roms. I just put the web up on 7/24 and I am already up to 500 hits per day. it is a Free Public Beta. if you like the product downloadable at my web site feel free to post a link on tour web page http://freemo.dhs.org (you can Dl RomNet there). I can only handle 40 users per con and only have a 56K so my Web server is not too great. as far as the RomNet server it is built to be very low bandwidth and can handle thousands of users at 1Kbs."

Hah, maybe this will be the end of rom web sites? hehehe, wouldn't that be funny.

I don't take any responsibility for the program, it may be a virus for all I know. I have not tried it out, and likely never will... since I have too many roms as it is. Use caution and use a virus scanner. You may also post your opinion of the program on the message boards if you try it.

Also, I received my Genice MP3 Player from Computergeeks.com. I am amazed at how fast it arrived. I think I ordered it tuesday night, and it arrived friday morning. I am very pleased with it and I'll post a review shortly once I figure out my answers for tomorrow's final exam. It's one of the best products of the year IMO. Definately worth the money.

Message Boards

Ok, I've fixed the bug in the message board script, so I can now moderate them better. Some dope thought he could make money with one of those lame pyramid schemes. If abuse like that continues, I'll be forced to make rules, and if it still continues, I will switch to a different script so that requires a login & password, and I will ban the person's IP.

MP3s and Napster

Ok, I'm sure you've heard about the preliminary injunction against Napster by now. I just thought I'd voice my opinion on the whole MP3/Napster thing... at least it will give you something to think about (sorry it turned out kind of long):

There is nothing new about MP3s. I've been using them for over 3 years now. MP3 encoding is a fantastic invention, and could be a powerful asset to the music industry. Why not take advantage of a technology that allows near CD quality with 1/10th the size (or whatever it is)? The only reason that the music industry does not like it is that they are not in control anymore.

I think this whole Napster suit is a total mistake. The money and time spent on this could be used for researching new methods of distribution so that the artists DO get paid. Perhaps something like stephen king has done with that book he released online. I'd gladly pay something like $1/song, for songs that I like, and not be forced to buy an entire album. But what better way to find out which songs I like than through MP3s? And I'm sure that most people out there feel the same way. I'm sure that if the music industry developed a program that allowed a person to temporarily download a song, and decide if they like it before they buy it, then have the program delete the song after it was played a few times, it would be a success. I am just as sick as everyone else for paying a damn $15+ for a CD! Figuring that the artist only gets a small fraction of that, and that it costs probably 10 cents to produce. Of course the executives will be pissed off about something like Napster taking money away. I think some form of online music would give the artists a chance to hugely increase their earning percentage, which they deserve, if they cut the record companies out of the picture, or at least put control back into the ARTISTS hands, and not some greedy fat ass sitting in an office.

Even if Napster is shut down for good, it will do almost NOTHING to stop music piracy. I've witnessed the software industry trying to stop piracy at least since the early 80's with the commodore 64. It's been nearly 20 years, and piracy is more rampant than ever. No one can stop it. At least not anytime soon. I've downloaded Napster, and tried it out a few times... but I didn't like it (I don't have a fast connection either). I prefer downloading stuff off of FTP anyway. I like the better privacy it provides anyway. There are other programs out there like gnutella, which don't depend on servers like napster. The industry won't be able to sue everyone, so they need to figure out a different way to handle the situation.

Not to say that I'm pro Napster at all. Their lies are total BS. I'd guess that no more than .01% of the songs traded are the "small artists" that actually benefit from something like this. Of course people use it to pirate music like metallica. I would agree with Napster being shut down, at least temporarily, until a better solution can be found. Where the artist gets their money for their hard work.

On a related note, I should be receiving my Genica Discman CD/MP3 player from www.computergeeks.com in a few days. This was the unit I mentioned several months ago which allows you to play regular music CDs, and CDs with mp3s on them. This would allow you to store around 10 hours of music on a CD :) It's only $99, so even if it's kind of flimsy, it should be pretty cool. I'll post a review of it when I get it in a few days. This is what I've been waiting for all along. I had the Diamond Rio several months ago, then sold it (for $50 profit :), but would only store like 60 minutes of music... and it cost more than this thing.

Back

I'm back from my vacation from Denver, Colorado. I went to a nice little town called estes park in the mountains and did some fishing and family reunion stuff. It was pretty uneventful, except I found a cool Kodak Advantix T550 APS camera in the glove box of the rental car :) , and I was able to sneak a knife I bought onto the plane through security... that says a lot doesn't it? They didn't even ask to open the bag or anything... and yeah, it was a carry on, not checked in. I remember one time I brought a CB radio on... and at least they asked to open the bag..

Cartridge Cleaning Tutorial

Retrogames found a nice tutorial on how to clean cartridge connectors... Something you have to do just about every time with NES games :) The guide is nice, although I would not recommend disassembling the cartridge to clean it. What's the point? You aren't going to do anything but risk ruining the IC chip in there by holding it in your hand. I don't know.. maybe if you are using a q-tip that was 3 inches in diamater? What are they thinking? It's easier & faster to do it with it assembled.. I'm guessing they just wanted to make it seem more complicated that it really is, by adding pointless steps.

Diablo has been defeated.

Well, I finished diablo 2, that was pretty quick. He definately seems easier than in Diablo I... Because I could never win the first one without cheating. The whole game seemed a little to easy. Of course, there are two more levels of difficulty I can play. The game was definately worth the $45 I spent on it. I still have plenty of battle.net games to play (if they ever get the servers up), and LAN games. Go buy the game if you don't already have it.

Here are a couple of tips if you haven't yet started. I played as the barbarian, so these probably work best for him:

Save your diamonds, and all gems for that matter, until the very last act. Save them, so you can put them in the horadric cube, or use gem shrines on them, to get perfect gems.

Don't put ANYTHING except diamonds in your shield. And don't do it until you are on the last level, and buy the best socketed shield (gothic). Try to put perfect diamonds in there only. You don't need to do it until just before you fight diablo either. There is a boss on that level that will give you several good gems.

You could probably get away with putting some crappy sapphires, or topaz, or something in a socketed shield in earlier levels though. But be sure to save the diamonds for the last level. Because diamonds increase ALL resistances, not just a single one. You could probably have MAX resistance on everything if you had 3 perfect diamonds.

Don't waste your skills on anything but the weapon. Choose one weapon, and use only that kind. I chose axe, and upgraded the axe skill to like 19 when I was at the end. None of the other skills are worth it. You may want to choose sword, I'm not sure. I used a mace in the beta, and it was kind of lame.

Gems are kind of lame in weapons. At least they are in the axe. I ended up using a weapon I think I found in act III or act II to complete the game. It is a good idea to have a weapon with cold power. It works well, even on diablo, to slow him down.

Also, if you don't want to upgrade only your weapon skill, upgrade your stamina & speed. I found some boots that made me run super quick, & have a lot of stamina. They came in very handy to outrun enemies & missiles. You should make sure you are never cornered too.
And if you run in to like 50 enemies at once (typical in hell), run towards the stairs, or a corner, so you only fight 2 or 3 at a time. Then slowly go back to the main pack of enemies, & draw off a couple more to fight seperately. I don't care what kind of armor & weapon you have, if you try to fight 50 enemies at once, you are going to die for sure.

Oh, and if you are a barbarian, do not waste a single attribute point on "energy". All it does is upgrade the mana, which you RARELY use. Better to use it 1st on strength, then dexterity, then vitality.

Buy the game at costco. It's only $45, compared to $50-60.

If you have any other tips or comments on diablo 2, post them on the "off topic" message board.
